The American Dream became pragmatic and secularized with the American Pragmatists. Rev. Martin Luther King's interpretation of Christian Agape' love is lost in secular commentary. It relates to the American Dream of opportunity. Before the Pragmatists came Jonathan Edwards, Emerson and others all of whom were theological in their foundations. I think the American Dream as it was initially taking form is a great idea, but perhaps it has taken a wrong term.
