Dr. Fred Sanders examines the book of 1 John to see how the trinity is addressed. He notes that John summarizes the entirety of the gospel with the simple phrase, "God is light." He continues on to demonstrate the unity of the Father and Son portrayed in 1 John 1, then looks forward to chapters 4 and 5 to see the inclusion of the Holy Spirit. Dr. Sanders explains that the fullness of these ideas cannot be extracted out of their text, but must be taken in with the book as a whole.
